About me

Hello. I am a video journalist with a beard and an increasingly inappropriate London accent. I used to travel a lot but now I mainly sit surrounded by half-finished books and say ‘Clementine, no’ to my baby daughter. A truly great book for me has to include wit and humour – there are lots of incredible writers who have only mastered the tragic mode and whom consequently I can never love, no matter how much I admire them. I used to keep my books very pristine but now I scribble all over them, which is one of the reasons I can't fully get into e-readers. I like linguistics and I have no time for grammar Nazis; consider me part of the grammar Allied Powers, hoping to force Lynn Truss to shoot herself in her bunker, or at the very least convict her in some kind of literary Nuremberg Trial. Now and then I write pornographic novels under a pseudonym which I am not telling you no matter how close you think we are.

 

My blog name is, of course, a reference to the great Austin Phelps quote – ‘Wear the old coat and buy the new book.’ Words to live by…
